Decatur Student Wins Savings Account in Essay Contest

The Delta Community Credit Union Youth Month Essay Contest asks students why it is wise to save money.

From Delta Community CU: Eleven elementary students will end the school year $100 richer and perhaps a little wiser about finances and the importance of saving for the future. They all won a $100 Sandy Savers Savings Account in the Delta Community Credit Union Youth Month Essay Contest, which asked students why it is wise to save money.

At The Museum School, fourth-grader Jizelle Anderson explained that “saving money for the future is wise because houses, college, cars and food are not free. You need all those things to survive adulthood.”

In addition to Jizelle, 10 other students who attend Delta Community’s Partners in Education (PIE) schools throughout metro Atlanta also received $100 savings accounts for their entries in the contest, which the Credit Union held during National Credit Union Youth Savings Month in April.

Teachers say the contest inspires important conversations about financial security and planning for the future, and it also helps students develop their writing skills. In addition to the essay contest, Delta Community supports its PIE schools throughout the school year with direct sponsorships and by providing financial literacy classes and materials.
