DEKALB COUNTY, GA — Tuesday is Election Day and Georgia voters who haven't already submitted absentee ballots through early voting locations, mail and drop boxes still have time to cast their ballot.

DeKalb Superior Court Judge Courtney L. Johnson has signed an order approving a petition by the Board of Registration and Elections to extend voting for two DeKalb County polling places that opened late this morning.

The Valley Brook precinct, located at Valley Brook Baptist Church, 1198 N. Valley Brook
Road, Decatur, 30033, will stay open until 7:40 p.m.

The Gresham Road precinct, located at Obama Elementary School, 3132 Clifton
Church Road SE, Atlanta, 30316, will remain open until 7:45 p.m.

This extension was requested, in an abundance of caution, to ensure that all electors at
the locations have the required full 12 hours of voting.

This year, DeKalb County voters will decide on races for president, U.S. House and U.S. Senate, and more.

There’s also a contested sheriff race between Sheriff Melody Maddox and Harold Dennis.

Maddox joined the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office as chief of administration. On July 1, 2019, then Sheriff Jeffery Mann appointed her chief deputy. On December 1, 2019, Melody Maddox became the 50th sheriff of DeKalb County.

Dennis, a former DeKalb reserve lieutenant, said he would initiate job training programs and continuing education and substance abuse programs for county jail inmates. He always has plans to use federal funds to facilitate a program for children to keep them from joining gangs and using drugs, according to his campaign website.

Another race to watch is the 5th District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, which had been held by the late civil rights icon John Lewis. Lewis died from pancreatic cancer in July.

Republican Angela Stanton-King is running against Democrat Nikema Williams.

President Donald Trump pardoned Stanton-King in February for her role in a car theft ring that led to a 2004 conviction on federal conspiracy charges and two years in prison, reported WABE.

Since King’s release from prison in 2005, the celebrated owner of Stanton Publishing House and Reality TV star of the BET Network docu-series “From the Bottom Up” has formed several organizations dedicated to reforming the criminal justice system and supporting returning citizens, according to her biography.

A special election in December will choose who fills Lewis' seat through the end of 2020.

Preparing for Election Day

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day, Nov. 3. If you are still in line by 7 p.m., you are allowed to cast your ballot.

On Election Day, you must vote at your designated polling place. You can find your assigned polling location on your voter registration card, by logging into the Secretary of State's My Voter Page, or by contacting your County Board of Registrar's Office.

When you get to your polling place, show your photo ID to the poll worker. A poll worker will check your photo ID, verify that you are registered and at the correct polling location, issue you a voter access card or ballot, whichever is applicable, and allow you to vote.
