DeKalb Schools Mourns Campus Supervisor Who Died Of COVID-19

Friends, family and loved ones of Washington Varnum, Jr. held a memorial for the DeKalb campus supervisor Sunday evening.

DEKALB COUNTY, GA — Washington Varnum, Jr. was a campus supervisor in the DeKalb County School District. His friends, family and loved ones held a memorial for him Sunday night after he died of COVID-19.

Varnum, Jr. worked as a campus supervisor at McNair and Henderson middle schools over the last eight years, according to his obituary. WSB-TV reported that Varnum, Jr. contracted COVID-19 in around Christmas time and died Feb. 1.

"He was loved by many with his big infectious smile. Washington never met a stranger and was always willing to help someone," his obituary reads.

Varnum, Jr. is survived by his mother Brenda, wife Carmen and four stepchildren, as well as other family members.

Family members shared a photo of him at the memorial and said he was beloved by everyone who knew him. Some educators at the memorial said they wanted teachers to return to the classroom Monday and let the superintendent know that one educator's death is too many, WSB-TV reported.
