Drink Up: Open Container District Created In Avondale Estates
See where you can walk around with a beer, glass of wine or cocktail in Avondale Estates, thanks to the city's new entertainment district.
AVONDALE ESTATES, GA — The city of Avondale Estates, which was recently named the nation's best small town beer scene, just created a designated area where you can now walk around with a beer, glass of wine or a cocktail in hand.
Avondale Estates City Commission members unanimously approved the creation of an entertainment district last week, where open containers of alcohol are allowed in order "to attract visitors and businesses to the area," according to city documents. The district is east of Sam's Crossing, north of North Avondale Road, west of Ashford Place and south of East Ponce de Leon Avenue.

Businesses can sell beer, wine and cocktails to patrons in city-approved 12-ounce cups, which can be carried anywhere in the district. Only one open-container cup is allowed per person.
USA Today's 10Best Readers' Choice Awards for the American craft beer scene were announced in March, with Avondale Estates besting 19 other small towns for the award.

"The charming town of Avondale Estates, just east of Decatur, has a small downtown area packed with unique food and beverage offerings. For beer lovers, there's Wild Heaven Beer, The Lost Druid Brewery, The Beer Growler & Pint Haus and (soon) Little Cottage Brewery," USA Today wrote about the city in March.
Little Cottage Brewery opened last month, and all four breweries are located in the entertainment district.
Businesses outside the district have to apply for a conditional exception to participate in the open container district and its rules, according to the open container ordinance.
