Georgia Power Brings STEM Activities To Discover Engineers Week
Employees are mentoring and leading hands-on activities to encourage students' interest in engineering in the energy sector.

For the 12th year, a group of Georgia Power employees from the Technical Women in Georgia (TWIG) employee resource group brought science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) hands-on activities to students at Forest Park High School and McNair Discover Learning Academy to celebrate Discover Engineers Week.
Students had the opportunity to learn about engineering careers and their importance in the energy and utilities industry and built model transmission towers during class.
Discover Engineers Week is celebrated every year in February to raise public awareness about the importance of engineers to our society. Around the country, engineers sought to be “pioneers of progress” by bringing engineering to life for students, educators and parents. The celebration has been held in the United States since its creation in 1951 to promote the importance of all STEM fields.

Since 2004, members of TWIG have educated high school students and mentored young women about career possibilities in the engineering field. In addition to Discover Engineers Week, TWIG members also volunteer with Mentoring A Girl In Construction (MAGIC) Camp and YMCA day camps. The employee resource group also provides a signature Women In Engineering mentoring program in partnership with Georgia Tech and Spelman College.
