Lakeside High School’s Band Presents a Free Public Concert Nov. 7

The concert will be held at 7 p.m. in the school's Fine Arts Auditorium, and will feature music spanning both time periods and culture.

In what has become a popular fall tradition, the students in Lakeside High School’s award-winning band program will present a free concert in the school’s Fine Arts Auditorium on Thursday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. Students ranging from freshmen to seniors will present an assortment of music spanning time periods and cultures, under the musical direction of Dr. David Fairchild, director of bands, and Daniel MacNamara, assistant band director. The students will play music ranging from Bach to Yagisawa, evoking images and events as diverse as the destruction of Pompeii to themes from the old west, and from the beauty of Japanese cherry blossoms to Georgia’s Appalachian Mountains.

“The students, music faculty, parents and community all look forward to this annual concert,” said Dr. Fairchild. “While hundreds of people enjoy the band’s halftime shows at each Lakeside football game and literally tens of thousands cheered the students as they marched in this year’s Dragon Con Parade, this is our first formal concert of the school year. I invite the community to come enjoy a wonderful evening of music. I am sure everyone will be impressed by how much the students have accomplished just in the first semester of the school year.”

The concert is free to the public, although donations are welcome. The band students have recently concluded their annual cheesecake sale and will soon kick-off a holiday poinsettia sale. Monies raised will support the purchase and repair of instruments, guest instructors and conductors, competition fees, travel expenses and music costs, among other items. In the spring of 2020, members of Lakeside’s band, orchestra and chorus will have the opportunity to travel together to Hawaii to perform at the Pearl Harbor National Memorial.

This is Lakeside High School’s 53rd year of exceptional musical instruction. It is truly a family affair, as many Lakeside graduates who once participated in the music program are now watching their own children study and perform music. Both David Fairchild and Daniel MacNamara are Lakeside High School graduates, and this year, Dr. Fairchild continued his own family tradition as he welcomed his oldest daughter into the Lakeside band.
