Weekend Planner: Start With Sidewalk Saturdays

You can enjoy pop-up art, music and comedy at Kavarna, a writers festival at Agnes Scott, free jazz and an author appearance.

There's plenty to do this weekend in Decatur and Avondale Estates. Here are five ideas. For a full list of possibilities, look at the Patch calendar of events.

1. Sidewalk Saturdays. The City of Decatur starts a weekly pop-up art program 3-6 p.m. Saturday in Oakhurst Park. Sidewalk Saturdays run through June and feature a mix of artists, singers, musicians, dancers and performers. Free admission.

2. Music and comedy. Kavarna coffee shop is increasing their entertainment on the weekend. This Saturday, hear The Wonder-Nerds, The Taft and Man Up, Yancey. Comedians are Ilia Dichev, Tommy 'Toast' Russell and Forrest Manis. Starts at 7:45 p.m. $5 cover.

3. Agnes Scott Writers Festival. Cristina García kicks off this this event at 4 p.m. Thursday at Winter Theatre in the Dana Fine Arts Center. Gish Jen appears at 8 p.m. Thursday at Gaines Chapel and Anjail Rashida Ahmad at 1 p.m. Friday at Winter Theatre. Free.

4. Jazz in Oakhurst. Jazz Nights at Scottish Rite starts at 7 p.m. Thursday at the at the Solarium at Historic Scottish Rite at 321 W. Hill St. in Decatur. EC3 (Ernest Coleman Trio) performs. Free.

5. Author appearance. Heywood Gould talks about and signs his new novel, Greenlight For Murder, at the Eagle Eye Book Shop. 2 p.m. Saturday. Free admission.
