4,000-Plus Gallon Sewage Spill Reported In Snellville

SNELLVILLE, GA — More than 4,000 gallons of sewage spilled Sunday into a creek tributary in Snellville.

Gwinnett County officials announced that the 4,108-gallon spill happened at a manhole on Highpoint Road around 5:26 p.m. and was stopped at 7:07 p.m.

The main cause of the spill was determined to be wipes, paper and other products, with grease being a secondary cause, Gwinnett water officials said.

The spill entered an unnamed tributary of Jacks Creek.

Crews raked the area and spread lime to help mitigate the effects of the spill. The Georgia Environmental Protection Division was notified of the spill.

Gwinnett's water resources department noted Monday that some products labeled "flushable" do not break apart once they are in the sanitary sewer system.
