During those formative years, the two of them learned about entrepreneurship and sales. They worked to make money on their own by selling cold drinks, sandwiches, “punch board” candy, mowed lawns, raised chickens and sold eggs during the Depression years.
Two months before graduating from Lanier High School, at the age of 17, Calvin joined the Navy. He went through training and learned to be a hospital corpsman. He planned to pursue a medical career after the war.
After discharge from the Navy he entered Emory University but left to help his father who would form a new company, Robertson Optical Laboratories, Inc.
He met and married Beverly Grace Eyles on January 20, 1950. They were married over 40 years and had three children: Kim, Debra and Chip.
Calvin and his brother, Richard, worked in the family business later becoming co-owners. The lessons they had learned as youngsters aided them in the business world.
Robertson Optical Laboratories, Inc. would expand to seven labs with fifteen locations in five states.
Calvin was a member of the Better Vision Institute (BVI) and once served as President. He was a Mason and a member of the Yaarab Shrine Temple. He was active at Briarlake Baptist Church and was one of the founders of the Businessmen’s Bible Class where he served as the second class president.
He authored two books, one of the “History of Robertson Optical Labs, Inc.” and the memoirs of him and his brother, Richard, growing up.
He is predeceased by his parents; his wife, Beverly; his brother, Richard; his son-in-law, Phillips Parker; and grandson, Calvin Winslow (Jack) Robertson, IV.
He is survived by his children: Kim Hash and husband, Michael of Suwanee, Debra Parker of Loganville, Calvin W. (Chip) Robertson, III and wife, Laine of Greer, SC. Calvin also had four grandchildren: Justin Hash, Kristin Hash, David Robertson and Mathew Robertson.
