Duplex Attic Fire Sparked In Gwinnett By Weekend Severe Weather

A tree taken down by the effects of Tropical Depression Claudette hit power lines attached to a home, likely starting the fire in its attic.

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA — Severe weather over the weekend may have led indirectly to a fire Sunday at a duplex owned by the Lawrenceville Housing Authority.

The blaze at a home on the 100 block of Maltbie Street NW started in the attic near where power lines enter the house, — apparently after a tree fell across those same power lines in the back yard. “The tree likely fell last night as the effects of Tropical Depression Claudette moved through the area,” according to a statement from Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services.

The fire was brought under control after about 10 minutes, with no injuries reported. The house, however, sustained heavy fire and water damage, and two adult residents were displaced.
