After seeing the lowest Labor Day gas prices in 11 years, there should be even better news at the pump in the coming weeks and months.

“Unless oil prices suddenly surge, motorists should expect gasoline to reach $2 a gallon or below by Christmas,” AAA said in its weekly fuel price briefing.

The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline was $2.25 in Georgia on Labor Day, more than a dollar cheaper than last year. The national average was $2.40.

AAA said the 2015 Labor Day weekend traffic was expected to be the busiest in seven years, largely due to falling gas prices.

Since peaking at $2.72 on June 15, the Georgia average has declined 74 of the past 84 days, for a total of 48 cents, AAA said Monday.

“These low gas prices likely influenced many Americans to take a last minute road trip,” AAA spokesman Mark Jenkins said in the briefing. “Motorists are saving between $15-$25 every time they go to the pump, and those savings could get even bigger. Labor Day marks the end of the busy summer travel season, which means gas demand will decline as fewer people take road trips. As a result, gas prices in the autumn and winter seasons could be the cheapest of the year.”

AAA said the price of oil has remained low and gas prices still have room to fall to catch up with recent oil price declines.

The lowest price reported Tuesday in Loganville on AtlantaGasPrice.com was $2.14.
