Gene A. Matthews, Former Loganville Mayor, Dies at 80
Matthews also was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and active member of Corinth Baptist Church.
LOGANVILLE, GA -- Gene Matthews, a former mayor and council member in Loganville, died Thursday, according to his obituary.
He was 80.
Matthews was a member, deacon and former Sunday School teacher of Corinth Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps.Â

Gene was former Mayor and City Councilman for the City of Loganville. He was Board Member Emeritus with the Walton County Christian Learning Center.Â
 Funeral Services were held Saturday at Corinth Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Joyce Matthews; daughters and sons-in-law, Jan and Bobby Campbell, Jill and Kenneth Ivey; grandchildren, Jalayne and Adam Lane, Jeremy and Danielle Campbell; Jessie and Daniel Echols, Kyle and Ashlyn Ivey; great-grandchildren, Noah Lane, Abby Lane, Bernisha Campbell, Sada Campbell, Malachi Campbell, Mercy Campbell, Aiden Echols, Jasper Campbell; brother, Larry Matthews; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Joel Garrett; many nieces, nephews and other family members.
"He was a wonderful husband, father, granddaddy, brother and friend to all who will be greatly missed,"Â Matthews' obituary reads.
