Georgia Weather: Wind Advisory For Metro Atlanta on Monday

High and heavy winds could break tree branches and knock down weakened trees, the National Weather Service says.

ATLANTA, GA — Dangerously high winds are expected throughout metro Atlanta on Monday, as the last of a storm system works its way through the area.

The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory for north and central Georgia, lasting until 7 p.m. on Monday.

Winds on Monday are forecast to be 20-30 m.p.h., with gusts up to 40 m.p.h. 'That will be the case fairly consistently from morning until the advisory is over at 7, the NWS says.

"These winds may break tree branches and down weaker trees, particularly those in saturated soils due to recent heavy rainfall," the weather service said in the advisory. "Unsecured outdoor items may be blown around."

In addition to the heavy wind, parts of metro Atlanta are in for another day of rain.

There's a 40 percent chance of rainfall on Monday, mainly before 11 a.m. The welcome news? That may be the end of the rain for a little while.

After Monday, metro Atlanta's weather forecast dries up for at least a couple of days and calls for high temperatures ranging from the low 50s to mid-60s. But rain chances will return by mid-week and expect to see temperatures dropping all the way down around freezing by week's end.

Here's a look at the area's weather forecast for this work week,according to the National Weather Service:

  • Monday: A 40 percent chance of showers, mainly before 11 a.m. Cloudy, with a high near 57. Windy, with a northwest wind 15 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 40 mph. Monday night, mostly cloudy with a low around 41.
  • Tuesday: Sunny, with a high near 60. Mostly clear Tuesday night, with a low around 45.
  • Wednesday: A 20 percent chance of showers after 1 p.m. Mostly sunny, with a high near 65. A 50 percent chance of showers Wednesday night, with a low again around 45.
  • Thursday: A 20 percent chance of showers. Mostly sunny, with a high near 52. Mostly clear with a low around 34 on Thursday night.
  • Friday: Sunny, with a high near 49. Mostly clear Friday night, with a low around 32.
