GWINNETT COUNTY, GA — For the first time in more than 60 years, the Gwinnett County Fair has been canceled.

“We’ve been rained out several times but never been canceled,” fair manager Dale Thurman told Patch. “But it’s been a very unusual year.”

In a brief statement posted Monday night to social media, the fair’s board of directors said it felt that “it’s in the best interest of the community, staff and volunteers to cancel” the fair, which had been scheduled for Sept. 17-27.

Gwinnett County’s climbing number of COVID-19 cases — 11,304 as of Monday — and too-easy access to the fairgrounds made the decision obvious, Thurman said.

“We have so many gates and so many entrances,” Thurman said. “For the safety of our customers we’d better skip this year and have a safe one next year in 2021.”

As a veteran of more than 20 years with the fair, Thurman said he was saddened the board chose to close.

“It’s in my blood, so I’m disappointed we had to cancel,” Thurman said, “but I think the decision is for the best.”
