GWINNETT COUNTY, GA — Republican U.S. Congressional candidate Rich McCormick still hasn’t conceded losing to Democrat Carolyn Bourdeaux — but he did say Monday that the anticipated Georgia vote recount may not change the results.

In a statement issued soon after Gwinnett certified its election results, McCormick said he remains “concerned about irregularities with the vote count” in that county.

Gwinnett County, the second most populous in Georgia, finally certified its results Monday after repeated problems with its computerized voting system.

“I believe the planned audit and anticipated recount of the Presidential results will fully investigate these concerns (in Gwinnett), though it may be unlikely to change the outcome of my race,” he said.

McCormick then urged support for keeping Sen. David Perdue and Sen. Kelly Loeffler in office “to protect our state and nation as it recovers from the pandemic.”

Although Georgia has yet to certify its results statewide, on Friday the Associated Press projected Bourdeaux as winning the race to represent U.S. House District 7. The district includes parts of Gwinnett and Forsyth counties and had long been a Republican stronghold.

In Gwinnett County, Bourdeaux took more than 56 percent of the vote, while in Forsyth County McCormick took more than 65 percent of the vote. Between the two, Bourdeaux edged out McCormick with just over 51 percent of the vote.
