Neighbors Near Car-Skateboard Accident Discuss Road Safety

One Patch user comments, "I think someone should call the civil engineering department of the City of Loganville to have this area evaluated for safety intervention."

News that a 12-year-old boy on a skateboard had been hit by a car this week prompted a discussion among neighbors about driver and pedestrian safety in the area.

"I live on Granite lane and this does not surprise me," user Daisy Duck wrote in the article's comments section:

The kids play in the street and the cars fly by. A week ago an adult walked right out in front of us when we were leaving the neighborhood. When that man walked in front of us he had just left a group of other adults and children. Apparently they thought it was funny because one of the ladies waved and smiled. How can children learn to play safely when we have adults that are not an example?

Rochelle added that she thought people should slow down in the Pebble Point subdivision:

I live on Pebble Point and people speed down the road as if there were a fire to get to!!!! I wouldn't ever bought a house on Pebble Point if I knew the cops could not pull you over for speeding. Speed bumps should be put on the street so our kids can play outside safely!

And Lynne Van Buul weighed in to agree with Daisy:

Pedestrians do have the right of way, but it doesn't guarantee that your casual walking in front of cars are going to slow them down! As a driver, I am aware of bicycles, motorcycles, pedestrians, etc. As a pedestrian, I never step out in front of traffic without looking both ways...even if I have a "go" signal....driver could be texting, looking down, etc. When someone dies it no longer matters who is/was at fault...in the end, each person is responsible for themselves. I think someone should call the civil engineering department of the City of Loganville to have this area evaluated for safety intervention.

A report last year noted that Georgia has a worse pedestrian safety record than the national average.
