The ninth Georgian arrested in connection with the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol is believed to have beaten a police officer with a flag.

ATLANTA — A ninth Georgia man arrested in connection with the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol may face up to 20 years in prison for felony charges that include assaulting a police officer with a dangerous weapon.
Jack Wade Whitton Jr., 30, of Locust Grove was arrested Thursday by Federal authorities who say they believe he was one of three men who beat a police officer with a baton, a flag, a pole and a crutch, according to a statement from the U.S. Department of Justice.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that a man believed to be Whitton is seen in videos posted online, wielding a crutch while the crowd shouts “Fight for Trump.” Other videos show a man believed to be Whitton punching and stomping on police officers.

Authorities say they believe Whitton was involved in the violent melee on the West Terrace, in the same area where fellow Georgian Rosanne Boyland was crushed to death.
Also indicted for assaulting officers were Jeffrey Sabol of Kittredge, Colorado; Peter Francis Stager of Conway, Arkansas; Clayton Ray Mullins of Benton, Kentucky; and Michael John Lopatic Sr. of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Other than being accused of assaulting officers during the riot, the four men are not otherwise connected.
