Two Grayson Ballerinas Representing Gwinnett Ballet Theatre Excel at Competition
Kenzie Martin, 14, and Madeline Whitehead, 14, competed in the Junior Age Group at the Youth America Grand Prix international competition.
Gwinnett Ballet Theatre dancers figured prominently at the Youth America Grand Prix March 1-3, including two dancers from Grayson. Kenzie Martin, 14, and Madeline Whitehead, 14, competed in the Junior Age Group at this international competition which was the subject of 2012’s outstanding feature film, “First Position.” Gwinnett Performing Arts Center in Duluth was the location for the competition events on March 1 and 2, and Gwinnett Ballet Theatre in Lawrenceville was the host for the Master Classes given by an outstanding group of ballet teachers from around the world on March 3.
Approximately 300 competitors participated in the YAGP Southeastern Semifinals which had never been held in the Atlanta area until now. GBT sent 10 dancers to YAGP: Claire Bockhop, Abigrace Diprima, Kendall Greene, Madison Greene, Kenzie Martin, Bianca Melidor, Nichole Polakowski, Cameron Silas, Jordan Silas, and Madeline Whitehead. Madison Greene was awarded top 12 in the Junior Classical Group, and Abigrace Diprima was awarded top 12 in both the Senior Contemporary and Senior Classical Groups.
Abigrace and Madison were both invited to attend YAGP activities at the YAGP New York City Final Competition and events in April. Bianca Melidor was placed in the top 24 in the Senior Classical Competition. All of GBT’s competitors performed beautifully and were awarded excellent marks.

Kenzie Martin chose a variation from Don Quixote as her competition piece. She is a student at Gwinnett Online Campus and the daughter of Tamora and Alan Martin. Madeline chose to perform a Gamzatti Variation from the ballet La Bayadere. She is a student at Grayson High School and is the daughter of Karen and Clay Whitehead.
Youth America Grand Prix is an international ballet competition entering its 13th year. It holds 12 semi final events throughout the United States and also semi finals in Japan, Brazil and France. It is a non-profit organization and focuses on scholarships and high level dance opportunities at some of the world’s most prestigious ballet companies for its finalists. Many young dancers who have participated in YAGP have found positions in some of the world’s most recognized companies.

Gwinnett Ballet Theatre has exciting summer programs for all ages and dance levels. With an address at 1800 Macleod Drive in Lawrenceville, it is conveniently located in spacious, brand new studios just across Sugarloaf Parkway from Gwinnett Technical College. Founded in 1977, GBT moved to Lawrenceville in September of 2012.
