When Is The Best Chance For Snow in Atlanta?

Forecasters have pinpointed when they think the metro area's best chance is for the first snow of this winter.

ATLANTA, GA — Dreaming of a white Christmas probably won't do you a whole lot of good if you're in the metro Atlanta area.

There's no snow in the forecast between now and the 25th, regardless of how merry and bright your days may be.

So, that raises the question — when will Atlanta see its first snow of winter?

Forecasters think they have a pretty good idea. And we've got a while to wait.

The National Weather Service says January 21-February 8 is the most likely time frame for the first snows of this winter in and around Atlanta.

While parts of the South, including the Texas panhandle and Appalachian mountains, saw snow as early as last month, Atlanta will be on the late end of things.

In a typical year, the first snows fall in January and February in the region spanning from the Carolinas to north Texas, the NWS says.

The Old Farmer's Almanac has a similar take on things.

It calls for Atlanta's first snow of the winter to fall during the week of January 22-27.

According to About.com, the average day of the first snowfall in Atlanta each year is January 21.

The earliest recorded first snow for the city was November 11 in 1968 and the latest, in 1993, was March 13.

So there you have it. Georgia forecasts say it will get plenty cold in coming weeks. But you'll have to be patient if you want to see the white stuff.
