Interactive STEAM Exhibits Open At Chattahoochee Nature Center
These 5 interactive STEAM stations will spark curiosity about science in residents of all ages.
Local author Jackson Pearce talks with NPR about her book “Ellie, Engineer”, the story of a girl scientist!
“When I was little, I loved pink and sparkles and ballet class … and power tools and building things. But especially when I was younger, I felt like I wasn’t allowed to like all of those things. There was this very real idea that you could like ‘girl stuff’ or ‘boy stuff.'”
“It wasn’t until I got older that I realized that’s ridiculous. There’s no such thing as ‘girl stuff’ and ‘boy stuff,’ there’s just stuff,” Pearce says. “But I really wish somebody had told me that when I was a kid because it would have made me accept myself in a way that I don’t think I did until I got older. And so with Ellie, I wanted to write about little girl that loved all the things that I loved.

Head outdoors this spring for our nature-inspired tech and tinker stations – 5 stations where you can experiment and explore. Our exhibit stations focus on the science of water – how it moves, how it is used - there’s plenty to play with while you learn at our STEM stations. Expand your creative mind and your vocabulary when you visit ECO TINKER! The stations are found throughout the nature center. Stop at the Nature Exchange for a map and a few supplies you will need to enjoy the exhibits.
Stations include:
Watershed Water Wall – play wall where kids can watch water flow through different elements that mimic elements of a watershed
Aqua Mandalas – water-inspired art – draw a mandala on dissolving paper and watch it disappear!
Attention! Water Tension – design “water striders” out of paperclips and get them to float on the surface of water
Cleaning the Chattahoochee – studying the technology used to clean the river – display will either be a video of the process, or an interactive to watch water be filtered
Captivating Capillary Action – looking at how capillary action works in plants by watching water move against gravity up tubes of various dimensions
