Blue Cap Celebrates 54 Years of Providing Excellent Services
Blue Cap, located in Blue Island, Serves People within the Community for 54 Years

On January 16, 1967, Blue Cap responded to the needs of the community by providing a school program that originally served 25 students with intellectual disabilities. Blue Cap originally served children from Calumet Park, Blue Island and Alsip but has transformed into serving over 150 people on the southside of Chicago and more than 30 south suburban communities. All programs are designed to align with Blue Cap’s mission of serving people with intellectual disabilities to be educated, have quality life experiences, be respected and be a valued member of their community.
Out of the first class, 5 people are still supported in Blue Cap’s Adult Day, Senior and Residential Programs (Pictured below).

After hearing Blue Cap was coming up on its 54th Anniversary one of the original student’s family member shared her first memory of Blue Cap. “One of my first memories of Blue Cap was my mother telling of Mrs. Ostby coming to her about my brother, John B., attending the new school, across Broadway, right by their house. Mrs. Ostby saw John always roaming around Blue Island and thought Blue Cap would be perfect for him. It certainly was a blessing in his life, as also my other family members. It has made John’s life much fuller than it ever would have been...” said Judy L., John B.’s sister. Here is to many more years to come of Blue Cap providing quality services to the people we support and the community we serve.
