SCHAUMBURG, IL- With a 5-1 victory over the Schaumburg Boomers on Thursday night, the Windy City ThunderBolts recorded their first sweep of the 2021 season. It was the Bolts (14-23) first sweep in 759 days.

Starting pitcher Kenny Mathews allowed a lone run in seven innings of efficient baseball. On offense, the Bolts only had two innings where they did not have a baserunner. Rob Calabrese and Jack Strunc both collected three hits. Calabrese hit his fourth homer of the year and his third at Wintrust Field.

Windy City struck first in the 2nd inning against Boomers starter Andrew Dean (2-5). After a wild pitch allowed Peyton Isaacson and Rob Weissheier to move into scoring position, Jairus Richards drove in Isaacson with a grounder to shortstop. The Bolts added one more in the second after Jack Strunc hit a single down the right field line to drive in Weissheier. In the 4th, the Bolts tacked on two more to extend their lead to 4-0. Rob Calbrese’s solo shot to left field gave the Bolts a 5-0 lead.
Kenny Mathews cruised through the first six innings, allowing no runs. The scoreless run stopped in the seventh when Angelo Gumbs hit a sac fly to center field to drive in Quincy Nieporte.
With the win and Lake Erie’s loss to Florence, the Bolts are 5.5 games out of first place with a three-game series upcoming with the Crushers.
The ThunderBolts take their three-game winning streak back to Ozinga Field, starting a six-game homestand against Lake Erie and the Southern Illinois Miners. Game one is scheduled for 7:05 P.M.
