ALSIP-CRESTWOOD, IL — If you’re among the millions of Americans traveling this 4th of July, you may be in for some sticker shock at the gas pump.
Gas prices are at a seven-year high heading into the holiday weekend, according to a recent AAA report. As of July 1, the average price for a gallon of gas in the United States was $3.12.
Last year, gas prices hovered around $2.18 per gallon just before the July 4 holiday.

How much can you expect to pay at the pump in Alsip-Crestwood? AAA data shows the average price for a gallon of gas in the Chicago Metro area was $3.55 on July 1, compared to $2.48 this same time last year. Average prices are updated daily. In Illinois, the average gas price is $3.36.
If you live in the western United States, you’re likely paying some of the highest gas prices in the nation. As of June 22, gas prices were as much as $4.24 in California, $3.67 in Nevada and $3.64 in Washington state.
Meanwhile, Southern states including Texas, Alabama, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Missouri are enjoying the nation’s lowest gas prices, ranging from $2.72 to $2.87 per gallon.
Destinations vary this 4th of July, but AAA says the top five destinations this year are Orlando; Anaheim, California; Denver; Las Vegas and Seattle.
