Accused Mail Thief Told Pal To 'Take Care And Run:' Police

Two Chicago men, one a former City Colleges of Chicago basketball star, are accused stealing mail from USPS truck in Alsip.

ALSIP, IL — A former City Colleges of Chicago basketball star accused of burglarizing a mail truck in Alsip is being held without bond on three outstanding warrants. Demarco Graham, 19, appeared before Cook County Judge John Mahoney on felony charges of burglar and theft. Graham’s alleged accomplice, 20-year-old Devin Moore, also of Chicago, is charged with the same.

Neighbors alerted Alsip police after two men, later identified as Graham and Moore, were spotted rifling through a mail truck around 2:30 p.m. Sept. 9, the prosecutor said. A witness told police he saw Moore unloading a bin full of mail and packages off the back of a USPS mail truck.

Moore then got into the front passenger seat of a silver Hyundai driven by Graham, the prosecutor said. A second witness followed the Hyundai until losing sight of it. Alsip police officers located the Hyundai at the Mid Point Apartments, 4050 W. 115th St. The prosecutor said Graham tried to pull away after spotting police, while Moore got out of the car and started running.

Graham was arrested after police said they found a large quantity of mail strewn around the car. When Moore emerged from behind a dumpster, the prosecutor said Graham yelled, “take care and run.” Moore allegedly ran into Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, where Alsip and Oak Lawn police officers found him hiding after a brief search, the prosecutor said.

The assistant public defender said that Graham attends Wilbur Wright Community College on a basketball scholarship, where Graham appears on the 2018 roster, where he averaged 19.5 points per game.

The judge told Graham that there were three felony warrants for his arrest out of Virginia. Graham is being held with no bond. His family members left the courtroom crying.

Moore is currently on probation and has a pending DUI in Florida, the prosecutor said. His bail was set at $50,000. Both are due back in court Sept. 26 in Bridgeview.

The United States Postal Inspector is also investigating. The stolen mail was returned into circulation, Alsip police said.
