CRESTWOOD, IL — A man being held on misdemeanor domestic battery charges at the Crestwood police station is accused of urinating on the floor of a jail cell. Raphion Roberson, 35, appeared before Cook County Judge Peter Felice on a felony charge of criminal damage to government property.

Crestwood police went to Roberson's apartment on Jan. 6 in the 14000 block of South Willow Lane, for a report of a domestic disturbance. When officers arrived, they said that Roberson had shoved the mother of his children, causing her to fall backward and cut her head. According to court records, Roberson pulled his toddler and baby on to his lap between himself and police, squeezing the children tightly to keep from being arrested. Roberson eventually wedged himself into a corner between the wall and bed holding the children after being advised he was under arrest. Police also claim that Roberson would not provide his name or date of birth, and refused to put his hands behind his back to be handcuffed.

Roberson was later charged with misdemeanor domestic battery, child endangerment, obstruction of justice, and resisting a police officer. While in the jail cell, police said that Roberson urinated on the floor, which had to be disinfected. Damages to the jail cell were under $500, the prosecutor said.

The assistant public defender told the judge that while Roberson was in custody, Crestwood police would not remove the handcuffs when Roberson said he had to go to the bathroom.

“Sounds like [police] called his bluff,” the assistant public defender said.
