CRESTWOOD, IL — An unidentified man died of gunshot wounds after he was found in the parking lot of a Crestwood apartment complex Thursday afternoon. Police said the man later died of his injuries at the hospital. Residents are asked to check home security video for possible suspects and vehicles that may have been involved.

At 3:08 p.m., Crestwood police received a call of shots fired in the 5700 block of West 128th Street. Initial reports were of multiple people shot, but when officers arrived they found one man in the rear parking lot with a gunshot wound to the head. The man was taken in grave condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died of his injuries.

Sgt. Det. Chris Soderlund, of the Crestwood Police Department, said police don't know if the man lived in the complex. He remains unidentified.

"We don’t know who he is yet," Soderlund said. "We don't have anything to indicate if there was an exchange of gunfire. Our number one goal is to identify him."

Neighbors who lived across the street from where the man was found told Patch they heard gunshots. The crime scene was contained in the parking lot.

Soderland said arrangements were being made to take the deceased man to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office, where he will undergo an autopsy Friday.

The Southwest Suburban Major Crimes Task Force has been deployed. Investigators remained on the scene Thursday evening canvassing the neighborhood and speaking to residents. Police are looking for four vehicles of interest, including:

  • a white Mercedes SUV
  • dark-colored Dodge Durango with tinted windows
  • a silver Infinity
  • and a Nissan Altima

Police are asking residents in the area of 128th and 129th streets, Carriage Lane, Park Place and Central Avenue to review home security video for the vehicles of interest. Soderlund said police have already received several calls from residents with video.

Anyone who has video or information is asked to call Det. Alexander at 708-926-7241 or Det. Passaglia at 708-926-7242.
