D218 Mourns Loss Of Eisenhower Student Killed In Pedestrian Crash

Shaniya Walker, 16, was a junior at Dist. 218's Eisenhower High School in Blue Island.

BLUE ISLAND, IL — A 16-year-old girl was hit by a passing vehicle Friday afternoon in Blue Island and died from her injuries, police said. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the teen as Shaniya Walker.

Dist. 218 spokesman Bob McParland confirmed that Shaniya was a junior at Eisenhower High School in Blue Island. Counselors will be available for students and staff on Monday.

"We grieve with her family during this incredibly difficult time," McParland said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Shaniya and her loved ones."

Around 4:30 p.m., Blue Island police responded to a traffic crash involving a pedestrian. When officers arrive, paramedics were working on a gravely injured pedestrian, later identified as Walker.

The teen was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where she was pronounced dead after life-saving efforts. The driver remained at the scene and showed no signs of impairment, police said.

The Suburban Major Reconstruction Team is assisting with the accident investigation. Blue Island police originally gave the girl's age as 17.
