Firefighter Injured During Building Fire In Lockport Township

The firefighter was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for evaluation where he was treated and released.

LOCKPORT, IL—A firefighter is recovering from his injuries following an explosion at a vacant two-story building early Wednesday morning in the unincorporated portion of Lockport Township.

According to the Lockport Township Fire Protection District, at 5:13 a.m. the fire department responded to a reported structure fire along the 35-hundred block of South State Street. When they arrived, firefighters found an empty two-story residence with a one-story addition off the back on fire.

The first floor of the building was found to have heavy fire through the roof, firefighters said. As companies stretched initial hose lines to the back of the building, firefighters said an explosion occurred in the two-story portion of the structure.

Firefighters said debris from the explosion did cause minor injuries to one member of a company that was working on the exterior of the building. That member was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for evaluation where he was treated and released.

Multiple fire departments from East Joliet, Homer, and Northwest Homer assisted the Lockport Township Fire Protection District on scene. Crews said the he fire was brought under control in
approximately 30 minutes, but companies spent about two hours on scene to completely
extinguish the fire.

Homer, Lemont, New Lenox, Plainfield, and Romeoville Fire Departments provided station
coverage while companies worked at the scene.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Lockport fire investigators.
