Homer Glen Looking For Biggest Trees In Town

Nominations for every species of tree is encouraged, and the largest of each species will receive recognition.

HOMER GLEN, IL — The Homer Glen Environment Committee is on the lookout for the biggest trees in the Village of Homer Glen. The annual Big Tree Champions Contest honors Arbor Day, according to the village website.

Nominations for every species of tree is encouraged, and the largest of each species will receive recognition. To compare the biggest trees, the tree's circumference is measured at 54 inches above ground level, according to the village.

The current champions are: a 72-inch circumference Ash tree; a 60-inch circumference Bald Cypress; a 146.5-inch circumference Black Walnut, 173-inch circumference Burr Oak, 50-inch circumference Common Buckeye, 99.5-inch circumference Eastern Cottonwood, 99-inch circumference Hard Maple, 133.75-inch circumference Hedge Apple, 35-inch circumference Japanese Maple, 11-inch circumference Musclewood, 62-inch circumference Norway Spruce, 128-inch circumference Red Oak, 46-inch circumference River Birch, 65.5-inch circumference Shagbark Hickory, 132-inch circumference Silver Maple, 122-inch circumference Sugar Maple, 50-inch circumference Sycamore, 94.5-inch circumference Tulip, 67-inch circumference Weeping Willow, 137-inch circumference White Oak, and 102-inch circumference Wild Black Cherry.
