Heroic Police Officer, 28, Dies at U of Chicago Trauma Center

Following the death of a police officer Samuel Jimenez, 28, who happened upon and responded to a shooting in progress and confronted the shooter inside Mercy Hospital today, the Mayor and the Police Chief held a press conference at U of C medical center a short time ago. Two deaths occurred at U of C emergency/trauma center: police officer Jimenez; and Dr. Tamara O'Neal, 38, the woman Mercy Hospital emergency-room doctor who was the ex-fiancée of the gunman. Dayna Less, 25, a pharmacy resident at Mercy Hospital was randomly shot by the gunman as she exited the elevator near the gunman. She died later at Northwestern Hospital emergency room. The gunman died at the scene of the shootings at Mercy hospital, 2525 S. Michigan Avenue. The gunman's death has been determined to have been caused by a gunshot from a Chicago Police SWAT team officer.
