Opinion: An Open Letter About UPS Poor Service to the U.S. FTC

Are your packages being thrown at your building by UPS instead of being delivered properly? Does UPS Not Use Your Buzzer or Intercom?

An Open Letter About UPS Poor Service to the U.S. FTC

After one too many damaged, stolen, and poorly delivered packages to me that "arrived" via UPS, I have just written to the United States Federal Trade Commission asking that federal agency to use its authority to stop these awful instances of awful package delivery service by UPS.

Here is my unedited letter:

Dear U.S. Federal Trade Commision:

I write to ask that you look into the monopolistic behavior of UPS, "United Parcel Service" as it may still be called.

Because there are only a few national package delivery services (actually, in addition to UPS ... isn't FedEx the only other "fully private"company that does package-delivery nationally?), I presume you define UPS as a monopoly; and that it therefore requires your oversight to make sure that appropriate Federal Government penalties and incentives are in place and acted upon, to make sure that an appropriate good to excellent level of service continues to exist at UPS.

I suppose that there may be variations across the United States in the quality of the delivery service that UPS provides.

However, if you wish, I can help you gather thousands if not millions of complaints about a recent wave of awful UPS service: for example and most importantly : throwing and breaking packages; and never ringing doorbells or apartment-intercom-buttons.

For now I will simply state that recent UPS service to me and my neighbors in this part of Chicago (60637, 60615) has been awful; and there is no sign that the Federal Government (i.e., you!) are acting to make sure the UPS near-monopoly-business is regulated such that they provide an appropriately-good and not a monopolistically-unregulated-awful kind of service.

Please investigate!

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Sidney Colton
