CCU and Employees Partner to Support Northern Illinois Food Bank

Cash donation is an example of "People Helping People" philosophy at work

Libertyville, IL, May 12, 2020: One way or another, COVID-19 has impacted just about everyone, both globally and in the United States. That impact is felt the most by the millions who have lost their jobs, and subsequently their ability to put food on the table, as a result of the global pandemic. Consumers Credit Union (CCU; $1.4 Billion, Waukegan, IL) and many of its employees have teamed up with the Northern Illinois Food Bank to do something about the hunger problem facing area residents. The ninety-year-old credit union has already donated $10,000 to the food bank, while its employees are working together to raise another $10,000 for the organization.

“Since our inception in 1930, Consumers Credit Union has strongly believed in the value of working closely with the communities we serve,” said Sean Rathjen, CEO of the Member-owned credit union. “In the current environment, we recognized early on that many lives would be turned upside down by the impact of COVID-19. We immediately contacted Northern Illinois Food to determine the best way to help.”

“Once our employees learned of our donation, many wanted to help individually, as well. This resulted in our employees coming up with a goal of matching our $10,000 donation on their own,” continued Rathjen. “This is a wonderful example of the credit union industry’s “People Helping People” philosophy in action! Our team has already raised approximately 20% of their goal, which they hope to hit in the coming weeks.”

Upon learning of the donation and the employee fundraising drive, Jeannine Kannegiesser, Director of Corporate and Foundation Giving for the Northern Illinois Food Bank, responded as follows:

“This is wonderful news. Thank you so much to you and the whole CCU team. Your generosity will help so many families who need our network’s help right now to have enough nutritious food, and into the future when we are expecting to see continued increased demand for our services. Please share the Food Bank’s website with your teammates where they can read about the Food Bank’s response and understand how their gift will have an impact: www.solvehungertoday.org/coronavirus.”
