LIBERTYVILLE, IL —Tributes have been pouring in for former Libertyville High School boys basketball coach Scott Bogumil, who died unexpectedly Saturday at the age of 52. Bogumil, who coached the Wildcats from 2004 to 2015, still was a counselor at the school.

“(Bogumil's) main thing was how much he cared about the kids. It was more about the kids than the actual game of basketball. He was a relationships kind of guy," current Libertyville boys basketball coach Brian Zyrkowski told Patch. "I remember him always talking to kids about how they could do better in basketball, or just about things in life. His door was always open. That's who coach Bogumil was."

Zyrkowski, who became Libertyville's head coach in 2017, coached the sophomore team when Bogumil was in charge of the varsity.

Bogumil, who was an assistant coach at Northridge Prep at the time of his death, compiled a record of 140-154 in 11 seasons at Libertyville, according to IHSA statistics. He coached the Wildcats at a time when several top-level Division I players competed in the North Suburban Conference, though not necessarily at Libertyville.

Despite this, Bogumil's teams finished over .500 five times and at .500 on two other occasions. His best season was a 17-10 campaign in 2005-06. Bogumil came to Libertyville after a successful seven-year stint as the head coach at Gordon Tech, now DePaul Prep.

"Any time you had a question about anything or anybody basketball-related, he had the answer," Zyrkowski said about Bogumil. "When I first came to Libertyville, he gave me the opportunity to coach the sophomore team. I got know him well and it developed into a great friendship, even after he resigned (in 2015). He was a great person, had two daughters and a great wife. It's sad. It's devastating."

A moment of silence was held in Bogumil's honor before the current Libertyville boys basketball team played at Glenbrook South on Monday.

Bogumil is survived by his wife Stacey and daughters Skyler and Sydney. According to the obituary a visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Gibbons Funeral Home, 134 South York Road in Elmhurst. The family has said that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 3816 Paysphere Circle, Chicago, IL 60674.
