Lake County Flooding Closes Roads

Weather officials say Lake County was hardest hit by overnight rainfall in the Chicago area and more rain is on its way.

LAKE COUNTY, IL – Heavy rains and standing water is wreaking havoc on some area roads, officials in Lake County said early Monday. As of 8 a.m., Highway 41 between Route 21 and Delany Road in Gurnee was closed due to flooding, according to the Lake County PASSAGE website. In addition, Washington Street west of Green Bay Road in Waukegan has been reduced to one lane in each direction due to high standing water, according to an update at 8:10 a.m. on the PASSAGE site.

Meanwhile, a flood warning has been issued for Lake County through 12:45 p.m. as weather officials say the county was the hardest hit by heavy rain that fell overnight across the Chicago area. Up to 2.5 inches of rain had already fallen in the county as of 6:41 a.m., the National Weather Service reports.

The National Weather Service says some areas that will experience flooding include Waukegan, North Chicago, Gurnee, Mundelein, Vernon Hills, Zion, Grayslake, Libertyville, Lake Zurich, Lake Forest, Round Lake, Beach Park, Wauconda, Fox Lake, Lake Villa, Island Lake, Long Grove, Park City, Gages Lake and Venetian Village.

The storms were expected to wind down this morning though strong wind gusts of 30 to 35 mph are possible. Then, several rounds of thunderstorms will follow this afternoon and evening, according to the National Weather Service. The strongest storms could bring large hail, wind gusts of up to 60 mph and frequent lightning.

Drivers are reminded to not drive on flooded roads.
