Three LHS football players earn WFPA Coach Kuz Leadership Award

Drumke, Holmes and Luce add to list of accolades from playoff-qualifying season, joining three other teammates earning Honors Night awards

On Tuesday, May 12 at 6:30 p.m., Libertyville High School (LHS) held their annual Senior Honors Night celebration. This year's celebration recognizing the Class of 2020 was held virtually.

Among the awards presented was the Wildcat Football Parents' Association (WFPA) Coach Kuz Leadership Award. Seven years ago, WFPA established the Coach Kuz Leadership Award to recognize senior football players who best exemplify the qualities Randy Kuceyeski instilled in his players – a sense of community, a commitment to excellence, and the importance of leadership – during his 18 years as head football coach at LHS, while compiling record of 123 wins to 58 losses, including one state runner-up and one state title. The Class of 2020 recipients are:

Dylan Drumke

Since inception, the Coach Kuz Leadership Award has provided $21,000 in support to recipients. "This level of funding would not be possible without the generous donations from WFPA sponsors and membership dues and gifts from LHS football parents, families, and alumni", said WFPA President, Ryan Wells.

Graduating LHS senior football players who have participated in the football program for all four years are eligible to apply for the Coach Kuz award. Applicants are required to submit an essay answering two questions, while also demonstrating their dedication to community service, leadership qualities, academic performance, football performance, and citizenship/conduct off the field. Blind copies of each application are evaluated by the LHS football coaching staff, and no more than three recipients are selected to receive the Coach Kuz Leadership Award each year.

In addition to Drumke, Holmes and Luce, three other senior football players earned accolades at the event:

  • William Falbe, Attitude is Everything: The Cameron Gillen Memorial Scholarship
  • Cole Fiorenza, American Legion Post 329 Citizenship Award
  • Joshua Stair, Libertyville Boys' Club Tim Wetzel Memorial Scholarship

Shaun Luce also earned the Libertyville Boys' Club Tim Wetzel Memorial Scholarship in addition to the Coach Kuz Leadership Award.

All three recipients will continue onto college in the fall. Drumke will be attending Eastern Illinois, and will be a member of the baseball team. Holmes' football career continues next season at Wisconsin-Whitewater. Luce will be attending Clemson University, and has been accepted into the business school.
