Flashing Lights to be Installed near L-W Central

The lights will indicate to drivers that the area is a school zone.

NEW LENOX, IL — Motorists can expect to soon see flashing lights along Schoolhouse Road near Lincoln-Way Central High School.

The lights—paired with additional signage—will indicate to drivers along the east side of the road that the area is a school zone.

Will County's public works committee recommended approval Tuesday of an intergovernmental agreement permitting the school district to install the flashing lights. As a supplementary measure, the county will also replace school zone signage that was removed during the widening of U.S. 30.

Traffic during peak times—such as dismissal and after athletic events—deem the lights necessary, particularly as students turn left out of of the school parking lot onto northbound Schoolhouse Road. With students from Mokena now attending Central, traffic is also impacted in that direction.

With the school zone signs, the speed limit will be adjusted from 45 mph, to 20 mph. The flashing lights are also intended to get students' attention.
