2 Men Accused of Possessing Stolen Car Taken In Armed Carjacking

Tactical officers surveilling gas stations for potential carjackers noticed the Kia Optima had two different license plates, cops said.

OAK LAWN, IL — A car parked by the pumps at an Oak Lawn gas station with two different license plates resulted in the arrests of two men on gun and possession of a stolen vehicle charges, police said.

Dudley E. Vivetter, 19, of Chicago, and 19-year-old Anthony Martin, of Yorkville, were each charged with a felony count of possession of a stolen motor vehicle. Martin was also charged with unlawful use of a weapon.

Due to an uptick in carjackings in Oak Lawn and elsewhere, police had put on extra patrols as a to prevent further incidents in the village.

Around 9:50 p.m. Dec. 14, Oak Lawn tactical officers were surveilling local gas stations where previous carjackings had occurred. Officers were monitoring the Marathon gas station at 93rd Street and Cicero Avenue, when they noticed two different plates on a black Kia Optima, neither of which matched the car.

Several people appeared to be inside the car. Police followed the Kia to the Midway Inn and Suites, 9320 S. Cicero Ave. The people inside the car went to their suite. Officers were able to check the VIN, and learned that the car had been taken in an aggravated vehicular hijacking out of Chicago on Dec. 10, police said.

A man, later identified as Martin, came out of the room and walked to the car. He opened the door and grabbed something off the floorboard. As Martin walked back to the room through the parking lot, police said officers approached him. Martin the report said he ran away up to the second floor balcony.

Police allege that Martin dropped something on the ground, which turned to be a loaded Polymer80 9mm Ghost Glock. Officers said they could not find the gun’s serial number.

The others, Vivetter and three juveniles, ranging in age from 16 to 17, were taken into custody in the room, police said. They were all brought to the Oak Lawn police station.

One of the juveniles, a girl, told officers that she and her boyfriend rented a room at Midway when some of their friends showed up. She got into the Kia, and they drove to the gas station where she bought some snacks, the report said. She was charged as a juvenile with criminal trespassing to a vehicle and released to her parents.

The other two juveniles, both boys, would not participate in police interviews. They were released to their parents’ custody.

Vivetter told police Martin picked him up at his house in the city in the Kia, police said. Martin slept over and the next day Vivetter told police they went to Oak Lawn to get a hotel room. They went to the gas station to get some blunts, then went back to Midway, according to the charges. Police said Vivetter told them he didn’t know anything about the car or gun.

Martin claimed he was picked up in South Holland. He and the others went to Oak Lawn to a hotel room, when they stopped at the gas station, police said. When he realized he forgot his phone in the Kia, he went out to the car to get it. When police surrounded him, he said he dropped the gun on the ground and gave up, according to the report.

The Cook County assistant state’s attorney approved felony charges. Both men appeared at a bond hearing Dec. 16 at the Bridgeview Courthouse. Vivetter is currently on probation for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon at the time of his arrest. Bail was set at $10,000.

Martin was found to be wanted on a felony warrant out of DuPage County for possession of a stolen motor vehicle. His bail was also set at $10,000.
