First Step to Become a Paramedic - Take the EMT Course
An informational session being held June 15 via Zoom
Oak Lawn, Illinois – Advocate Christ Medical Center, Oak Lawn, is accepting applications for its four-month Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training course. The course is scheduled to meet two times per week at the EMS Academy, 5220 W. 105th Street, Oak Lawn. The day session meets on Monday and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. beginning August 9; and the evening session meets on Tuesday and Thursday from 6 to 10 p.m. beginning August 10.
The EMT course is the first step toward becoming a paramedic. Students learn how to assess and manage patients with medical and traumatic emergencies before taking them to the hospital. Taught by seasoned paramedics, registered nurses, and other critical care experts, the course covers delivering babies, and emergency medical treatment for victims of heart attack, stroke, seizure, motor vehicle accidents, gunshot wounds, and falls.
The cost of the course is $1450, which covers books, uniform shirt, AHA Healthcare Provider CPR class, required background check, classroom lab fees and course instruction.

Students will be required to purchase a stethoscope and a watch with a second-hand for use in class, clinical, and ambulance experiences. Students will need to purchase black or navy-blue Docker-style pants and a pair of comfortable black shoes (no gym shoes). Additionally, due to COVID, students are required to purchase a solid color face mask. This must be worn while attending live sessions at the EMS academy.
Advocate Christ Medical Center’s EMT course is approved by the Illinois Department of Public Health, Division of Emergency Medical Services, and accredited through the Illinois Community College Board.

College credit: You can enroll as a Moraine Valley Community College student through the academy. You will complete the application online. You must take a placement test that you will arrange with the college once you have completed your MVCC application. There is a fee for the placement testing, which is a cost to you. There is no additional cost to you for these credits, but you must be a student in good standing with MVCC. This means if you have attended MVCC in the past you must be free of any financial or academic holds. High school seniors must obtain permission to take the course from their counselor before registering for the class. Obtaining these credits will be optional and it is your responsibility to clear your holds with the college.
