OAK LAWN, IL — Democrat Marie Newman, who won the 3rd District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives last week, echoed President-elect Joe Biden’s conciliatory message of healing the nation and ushering Congress out of partisan gridlock after four fractious years under the Trump administration.

In a congratulatory statement, Newman said under a Joe Biden Presidency that the greatest challenges of our time would be addressed with clarity and compassion.

“Joe Biden has a clear mandate to address the COVID-19 pandemic and build back our economy with a stimulus package centered around working people. Together we will take decisive action to address climate change, protect and expand access to affordable health care, and rebuild our economy by investing in transportation and infrastructure innovation.

“Today is the dawn of a new era in this country. One where equity and justice are front-and-center. I look forward to working with President-elect Joe Biden, Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, and my colleagues in Congress to clean up the mess that Donald Trump created.”

During a League of Women Voters' candidates forum, Newman said she believed in having conversations with her congressional colleagues in the hallway and listening to people.

A new Congress session starts every two years on Jan. 3 following either a general or midterm election. Since Jan. 3, 2021 falls on a Sunday on a day when Congress does not convene meetings, Congress can pass new legislation to change the start date, but none has yet been passed.
