Each week the Athletic Department selects a Spartan Athlete of the Week. The recipient for the week of February 3 is senior wrestler Chris Czopek.

Last weekend, he became just the school’s fourth individual Illinois High School Association Regional Champion in the past 10 years by winning the 170-pound weight class at Reavis.

Czopek earned the title by defeating Mount Carmel’s Owen Jacobson in the finals, which was one of only two losses on the day suffered by Mount Carmel wrestlers. He won the finals match, 9-6 to run his record up to 29-9 on the season.

“Our senior captain is now fifth on the team in wins, third in team points, third in takedowns, and tied for the lead in major decisions,” said head coach Steve Long.
