Richards Football Coach Honored In IHSA's 'Teacher Spotlight'

Tony Sheehan recognized for going extra mile for shut-in students during pandemic, police said.

OAK LAWN, IL – Anthony Sheehan, a social studies teacher and head varsity football coach at Richards High School, was recognized as part of the Illinois High School Association’s teacher spotlight program.

Sheehan received a $500 gift card to be used toward resources for his classroom from COUNTRY Financial, a partner in the IHSA initiative.

“We are excited to be partnering with COUNTRY Financial on the ‘Teacher Spotlight” initiative. So many teachers and coaches around the state have gone above and beyond the call of duty during the COVID-19 pandemic to stay connected with students that it is a privilege to recognize these individuals for their efforts, said IHSA Assistant Executive Director, Tracie Henry.”

The “Teacher Spotlight” program was established during the pandemic when it became known that many educators were going out of their way to make sure students’ emotional needs were being met. IHSA knew it wanted to shine a spotlight on those efforts, and from that small seed an idea grew.
