The National Weather Service predicts thunderstorms, lightning strikes and “hail the size of pennies” as an “active spring weather pattern” moves through the region today and Thursday.

“Thunderstorms will likely develop toward evening, with several rounds of storms expected overnight into Thursday morning. Some of these storms could also produce large hail and locally heavy rainfall, but the greatest threat of severe weather will develop Thursday afternoon,” reports the National Weather Service.

Tornadoes could also develop Thursday.

After the storm system passes through, expect to see temperatures in the 50s. One-quarter to one-half-inch of rain is expected to fall.

The NWS urges everyone to monitor the weather on Thursday because the region has been placed under an “enhanced risk” status for severe thunderstorms by the NOAA NWS Storm Prediction Center (SPC).
