Swallow Cliff Chapter NSDAR Joins in Honoring Local Veteran

VFW Ritual Guard and Axemen participate in the activities

At Thursday night's girls softball game in Hometown, held to honor local resident John Volakakis, Gale Shafer, Vice Regent of Swallow Cliff Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, presented to John a DAR certificate of appreciation for his military service and a lapel pin. The chapter partners with the Department of Defense 50th Anniversary Viet Nam Commemorative Program to recognize veterans who served during this era. Others joined in making this a special night for John. Presenting the Colors was the Ritual Guard from the Johnson-Phelps VFW. The Axemen, a local motorcycle group, were on hand to express their thanks for John's service to the nation and for his friendship over the years.

To make the evening even more special, the Westside Warriors and the Southside Smoke teams wore game shirts with John's name on the back. One of the participants on the Warriors team is a granddaughter. Many family members were present to show their love and support, and all attending the night's activities enjoyed pizza and treats.
