Carjacker Shot At Officer After Stealing Car In Orland: Feds

ORLAND PARK, IL — A Chicago man faces federal carjacking charges after police say he took a car from a victim in Orland Park, then fired a shot at a police officer who was trying to stop him.

David Johnson, 23, is charged with one count of carjacking in connection with the Friday evening incident, according to a filed criminal complaint from the U.S. District Court. Johnson appeared Tuesday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Jeffrey T. Gilbert, who ordered that he remain in federal custody. A preliminary hearing has been set for 11:30 a.m. Feb. 26.

According to the complaint, the victim was sitting in his parked car on the side of the road for about five minutes outside his Orland Park home in the 15500 block of Hollyhock Court. Johnson approached the man and pointed a gun to his head, saying, "Don’t you ****ing move," and "Give me the key," according to the complaint.

Police said Johnson then stole the car, a black Mercedes-Benz, and was pursued in a high-speed chase by Oak Forest police, later crashing it into another car near the intersection of 112th and Hamlet in Chicago's Morgan Park neighborhood. According to the complaint, Johnson then ran off, firing a shot at an Oak Forest police officer who was trying to stop him, according to the complaint.

Johnson was later found in the back seat of a black Acura Sedan near 109th Place and Loomis in Chicago with two other men. Police stopped the car and patted all three down for weapons, but none were found, according to the complaint. Johnson was arrested by Chicago police.

Police later found a back handgun on the driver's side of the stolen Mercedes, according to the complaint. The 9 mm pistol was loaded with 23 bullets, but police believe Johnson must have had more than one gun, the complaint states. A second gun was not found.

U.S. District Court records show that Johnson is currently on a federal supervised release after being sentenced to a 14-month prison term for unlawful possession of a fire arm. He was released on April 9, 2020, according to the compliant. In 2017, Johnson was convicted of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, the complaint states.

The federal carjacking charges are punishable by a maximum 15-year sentence in federal prison if Johnson is convicted, according to the complaint.
