Homeowner Burned in Christmas Tree Fire at Orland Park House

The fire broke out Monday morning and the 80th Avenue house is severely damaged.

ORLAND PARK, IL — A homeowner was burned and Orland Fire Protection District firefighters encountered heavy fire upon responding to a call at 13827 80th Ave. Monday morning. The homeowner was taken to Loyola University Medical Center for treatment in the burn unit.

The fire was reported at 10:22 a.m., and the house sustained heavy fire and smoke damage. Fire officials believe the fire started in or near a live Christmas tree, according to a statement from the fire district, although the investigation has yet to be concluded.

The homeowner was hurt trying to put the fire out.

“The first thing someone should do is make sure everyone is out of the premises and accounted for, and call 9-1-1,” Fire Chief Michael Schofield said. “Outside of a very small fire, don’t battle a blaze by yourself. Leave the premises and wait for firefighters to arrive.”

Schofield said the fire at the home was intense.
