Man Recants Story About Attack Outside Sporting Goods Store: Cops

An account of an attack shared on social media never happened, the Village of Orland Park said Tuesday.

A tale shared on social media about a man jumped outside of an Orland Park shopping center was false, police said Tuesday—and the victim has since recanted his story.

The Orland Park Police Department investigated a Facebook post detailing an alleged altercation that reportedly took place Friday evening outside a Dick's Sporting Goods store. A person reported that a man had been, "jumped, robbed and the s*** kicked out of," according to the post, which caught the attention of many residents.

"The only reason they stopped was cause a lady screamed 'I called the cops,'" according to the account. The person went on to say that police arrived on the scene, allegedly telling the victim that similar incidents were taking place across Tinley Park and Orland Park.

But that's false, police said in a statement Tuesday.

"The Orland Park Police Department was not notified at the time of the alleged incident nor did any police personnel respond as was reported in the post," according to a statement shared by the Village of Orland Park.
