Orland Park Man Dies after Struck by Semi on I-80 Westbound

One driver says the man appeared to have intentionally stepped into the truck's path.

A man was killed late Monday afternoon when he was struck by a semi on I-80 Westbound near New Lenox.

Ralph O. Sharp, 58, of Orland Park, was pronounced dead near the scene, according to the Will County Coroner's Office.

The incident occurred around 3:45 p.m. on westbound I-80 near I-355, according to the New Lenox Fire Protection District.

Driver Melissa Leggero said she saw the man run into the road.

"But before he ran into the road he was standing alongside the road by what I assumed was his vehicle," Leggero said. "It seemed as if he were looking for something or waiting for someone so I assumed he needed a tow."

All westbound lanes of I-80 were closed for more than two hours following the incident, with traffic only allowed to pass on the right shoulder. The lanes reopened around 6:15 p.m.

Illinois State Police are investigating.
