Stolen Car Found, Suspect Leaps From Second Floor At Orland Mall: Cops

A 26-year-old Calumet City man faces several charges after leading police on a foot chase inside Orland Square Mall Friday, police said.

ORLAND PARK, IL ? A stolen car was recovered, and the suspect was arrested after jumping over a railing from the upper level during a foot chase at the Orland Square Mall on Friday, police said Monday.

Orland Park tactical officers Friday found a stolen Dodge Charger in the mall parking lot and watched as a man, later identified as Devonta Harris, 26, of Calumet City, got into the vehicle and attempted to drive away, police said. The stolen vehicle immediately became disabled, and Harris fled on foot into the shopping center, with officers close behind.

Witnesses reported a flurry of activity near Von Maur as the chase ensued. Harris attempted to evade the officers and leapt from the upper level railing to the lower level floor, police said. Harris attempted to flee again, and officers were able to take him into custody.

Further investigation revealed Harris? current active parole status, as he is wanted by the Cook County Sheriff?s Department for escape after officials say he removed his electronic monitoring bracelet. Harris also has an original arrest warrant from the Tinley Park Police Department, for fleeing and eluding.

In addition to the warrants, Harris was charged with felonies possession of a stolen vehicle, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, and misdemeanors fleeing and eluding police, obstructing a peace officer, and obstructing identification.

Harris appeared in bond court Monday. He was issued a $25,000 bail and held on a ?no bond? warrant for the prior escape charge.
