Driver Dies In Rollover Crash After Swerving Around Deer: Sheriff

A 50-year-old Cortland man swerved around a deer, causing his car to roll at least twice before crashing into a utility pole, police said.

BURLINGTON TOWNSHIP, IL — A 50-year-old man died Saturday after his car rolled several times when he tried to avoid hitting a deer in unincorporated Hampshire, according to Kane County Sheriff Ron Hain.

James D. Coffman, of Cortland, was driving south on Peplow Road around 1:30 a.m. Saturday when a deer crossed in front of his Ford Focus, Hain said. Coffman swerved around the deer, which caused his car to roll at least twice before crashing into a utility pole, the sheriff said.

He was taken to Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb, where he died later on Saturday, according to Hain.
