Firefighter Injured in Batavia Warehouse Fire

It took about 60 firefighters to extinguish the blaze at 601 Kingsland Drive.

One firefighter was injured while battling a fire at a warehouse at 601 Kingsland Drive on April 25. It took 60 firefighters 30 minutes to extinguish the blaze, but they were on the scene for five hours.

“The long distance to reach the seat of the fire, and the layout of large pieces of equipment combined with zero visibility conditions contributed to the difficulty in initial extinguishment,” Batavia Fire Officials said in a written release. “Fire crews were able to control the fire in approximately 30 minutes and ventilation efforts took several hours due to the size of the warehouse.”

The warehouse is home to the Candle Corps of America, which meant that the contents of the warehouse were very flammable. The bulk of the fire was in the manufacturing area of the building.

“The fire caused significant damage to the building and the contents and is being investigated currently,” the fire department reported. “A partial roof collapse above the fire area left that part of the building very dangerous.”

The injured firefighter was taken to the hospital and treated and released. Several other firefighters on scene were monitored for signs of exhaustion.
